Essaouira (formerly Mogador) feels a world away from Marrakech. It is blue and white, breezy, and incredibly laid-back. This full-day trip takes you west to the Atlantic coast. The drive takes you through the unique Argan forest biosphere. Keep your eyes peeled for goats climbing the trees to eat the nuts—a surreal sight you'll stop to photograph. Upon arrival in Essaouira, you have the freedom to explore at your own pace. The Medina is pedestrian-only and much easier to navigate than Marrakech. Walk the Skala de la Ville, the sea-facing fortifications where canons still point out to the ocean. Wander the thuya wood workshops and art galleries. Head to the port to see the blue boats unloading their catch—sardines, eels, crabs. You can buy fish fresh and have it grilled right there. It’s a day of fresh air, seagulls crying, and relaxed vibes.
