Marrakech holds a profound history of coexistence. For centuries, Muslims and Jews lived side by side, influencing each other’s crafts, cuisine, and culture. The Mellah, established in 1558, is the physical memory of this relationship. On this heritage tour, we peel back the layers of the city. Starting at the Place des Ferblantiers (Tin Smiths Square), we enter the Mellah, immediately noticing the difference in architecture—wooden balconies overlooking the street, unlike the inward-facing Muslim homes. We visit the Slat Al Azama Synagogue, founded by exiles from Spain in 1492, a beautiful blue-and-white courtyard that is still an active place of worship. A short walk away lies the Miaara Jewish Cemetery, the largest in Morocco. Walking among the whitewashed tombs is a moving experience of peace and endurance. Your guide will share stories of the 'Tsadikim' (Saints) revered by both faiths and the current revival of Jewish heritage in the kingdom. We end with a stroll through the Mellah's spice souk, historically the center of the spice trade.
