3-Day Merzouga Sahara Expedition: The Real Dunes

This is the big one. While Agafay is a beautiful stone desert nearby, Merzouga is the real deal—the endless sea of orange sand dunes (Erg Chebbi) you see in movies. Reaching it is an epic journey that traverses the entire backbone of Morocco. **Day 1:** We leave Marrakech and climb the High Atlas, crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260m. We start the 'Road of 1,000 Kasbahs', visiting the movie-famous Ait Benhaddou and stopping in the Dades Valley for the night. **Day 2:** We venture further east, walking through the massive fault line of Todra Gorge. Finally, the asphalt ends and the sand begins. You swap the van for camels and trek into the dunes as the sun sets. The silence of the Sahara is absolute. You sleep in a camp under a blanket of stars. **Day 3:** Wake for a sunrise that sets the dunes on fire with color. Ride back to civilization and begin the long drive back to Marrakech (or transfer to Fes), passing through the Anti-Atlas landscapes.
