As the sun sets, Jemaa el-Fnaa transforms. The day's juice stalls give way to a rising smoke of a hundred grills, and the air fills with the rhythm of Gnawa drums. This is the heartbeat of Marrakech, a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Exploring it alone can be intimidating; exploring it with us is an adventure. We begin above the fray, on a rooftop terrace, watching the spectacle of the lights flicking on across the square. Then, we descend into the energy. Your guide will steer you through the 'Halqa' (circles) of performers—snake charmers, acrobats, and storytellers—decoding the cultural significance of this nightly theatre. This is also a tasting journey. We move beyond the tourist traps to the stalls where locals eat. Sip a warming bowl of Harira (lentil and chickpea soup) with a sticky sweet Chebakia. Try the famous spiced tea with 'Khoudenjal'. For the brave, there are snails in herbaceous broth; for the hungry, fresh grilled meats or Maakouda. We wind through the night markets of the souk, now mysterious in the shadows, before ending with a full belly and a deep appreciation for this living theater.
